An Israeli soldier was killed and five others injured in a series of shootings Sunday in central Israel that police there described as a suspected terror attack.

Omar Yassin, an Israeli Arab from Tayibe, allegedly conducted three drive-by shootings with a submachine gun near the occupied West Bank city of Qalqilya, the Times of Israel reported.

The first shooting took place at a gas station near Kochav Ya’ir after 10:30 a.m., leaving two people injured, before Yassin and co-conspirators carried out attacks in Tzur Yitzhak and Tzur Natan, Israeli police said.

One the road outside the community, the shooter targeted 55-year-old reservist Master Sgt. Haim Kalomiti, Israel said.

Kalomiti, a father of three from Tzur Natan, was a member of the community’s civil defense squad that served in the 881st Ephraim Regional Brigade.

Another shooting victim was also identified as a reservist, and at least two of the injured were in serious condition, officials said.

After the attacks, the suspects drove into the West bank, clashing with Israeli police — who chased down Yassin and killed him in a shootout at around 11:30 a.m.

A second suspect who tried to stab police with a broken glass bottle was taken into custody without injuries, the TOI reported.

Hamas praised the attacks to stopped short of claiming responsibility.

Israeli soldiers were deployed to one of the sites in central Israel and to a nearby Israeli settlement in the West Bank after the shootings, the military said.

Local officials said the incidents demonstrated the need to increase security for Israeli towns bordering the occupied West Bank

Hardline Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich went as far as to call for a “profound change” among Israel’s Arab community, saying the “dangerous and extremist breeding ground for terrorism is growing and seeks to destroy the State of Israel.”
