China has showcased the PHL-191 multiple launch rocket system, widely described as the modern successor to the Soviet Katyusha. New PLA footage highlights a powerful air-burst "steel rain" munition capable of releasing thousands of steel fragments across a wide battlefield while the system also fires precision-guided rockets and tactical missiles. Introduced in 2019, the modular launcher can engage targets between 130 and 500 kilometres depending on the ammunition used. Military analysts believe the PHL-191 could threaten troop formations, radar installations, command centres, critical infrastructure and even warships, marking a major leap in China's long-range strike capabilities.
