Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka Reveal if They’re the “Cool” Dads to Twins Gideon and Harper
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are not like the regular dads—they’re the cool dads.
And the couple received the official stamp of approval from their 15-year-old twins Harper and Gideon themselves.
“I think so,” Harris told E! News at the Tony Awards June 7 in an interview alongside Burtka, when asked if their teens thought they were cool. “What I love about Harper and Gideon is they have really, really great senses of humor. They make us laugh a lot.”
Sometimes, Harris, 52, and Burtka, 51, receive the reciprocal.
“They laugh at our jokes sometimes, which feels like a win,” Harris joked. “It’s probably just more performance on their part. They’ll laugh at our jokes so they can ask to get money for a matcha. But I’ll take it. Any laughs I can get.”
Meanwhile, Burtka admitted he’s done some investigating into learning their teenagers’ true feelings, adding, “I’m told from their other friends that they like us and we’re the cool dads.”
For the pair—who tied the knot in 2014—it’s been a fun phase of life as parents.
“They think they’re all grown up,” Burtka explained, with Harris continuing, “They’re high school teenagers. They’re super fun, super independent.”
Burtka added, “They really don’t necessarily want you there, but you need to be there if they fall.”
Indeed, Harris emphasized that his husband has done “amazing” parenting, to which Burtka clarified, “They’re good kids, so we’re lucky.”
As for what’s next for their soon-to-be high school sophomores?

“It wouldn’t surprise me if they both enter into entertainment in some form,” Harris shared. “I think my single path of starting as an actor young was really unique, so I wouldn’t encourage that necessarily but they’ll probably be actor adjacent. I hope they can do some proper studying. Go to college and actually study it and then perform.”
Burtka concurred, adding, “They really love the theater, they love movies, they love TV.”
