The Reggae Museum NYC is proud to announce a cultural partnership with Jamaica Day NJ for a special museum-style exhibition celebrating the history, creativity and enduring influence of women in Jamaican music and culture.
The exhibition, titled “Women in Reggae & Dancehall — Then, Now & Next: The Series — Voices, Style & Legacy,” will be presented during the 10th-anniversary celebration of Jamaica Day on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Eastside Park in Paterson, New Jersey.
Presented by Reggae Arts & Culture Foundation Inc., the exhibition will explore the powerful role women have played in the development, evolution and global expansion of reggae and dancehall. Through visual storytelling, cultural interpretation and museum-inspired displays, visitors will be invited to consider how women have shaped the music’s sound, image, fashion, performance traditions and international identity.
The featured subjects will be revealed through the exhibition experience, allowing guests to discover the stories, artistic contributions and cultural moments represented in the presentation.
A Cultural Partnership Rooted in Legacy
The collaboration between The Reggae Museum NYC and Jamaica Day NJ brings together two organizations committed to preserving and celebrating Jamaican heritage.
For 10 years, Jamaica Day NJ has created a public platform where families, artists, community leaders and cultural organizations can gather in celebration of Jamaican music, food, entertainment and national pride.
By incorporating a curated exhibition into the anniversary program, the event expands beyond live entertainment to include cultural education, historical preservation and intergenerational storytelling.
The partnership also reflects The Reggae Museum NYC’s mission to document reggae and dancehall as living cultural movements—not simply musical genres, but global expressions connected to history, fashion, identity, community and social change.
Celebrating Women’s Voices, Style and Legacy
“Women in Reggae & Dancehall — Then, Now & Next” examines the journey of women across different generations of Jamaican music.
The exhibition recognizes the women who helped establish the foundation, those carrying the culture forward today and the emerging voices positioned to shape its future.
Rather than presenting reggae and dancehall history as something frozen in the past, the exhibition connects historical achievements with contemporary creativity. It demonstrates how women have continuously challenged expectations, created new artistic possibilities and influenced audiences throughout Jamaica and around the world.
Fashion and personal style will also serve as important parts of the exhibition’s storytelling. In reggae and dancehall culture, clothing, stage presentation and visual identity have often communicated strength, independence, resistance, glamour and cultural pride.
Bringing the Museum Directly to the Community
The Jamaica Day NJ presentation is part of The Reggae Museum NYC’s developing program of pop-up exhibitions and public cultural experiences.
While plans continue for a permanent museum destination, these traveling and community-based presentations allow the institution to bring reggae history directly to audiences throughout the region.
The pop-up format also makes museum education more accessible. Visitors attending a major community celebration can encounter historical interpretation, cultural artifacts and meaningful stories in an environment that feels welcoming, energetic and connected to the living culture.
The exhibition is designed for longtime reggae supporters, younger audiences discovering the history, families sharing Jamaican heritage across generations and visitors interested in understanding the global importance of reggae and dancehall.
Jamaica Day NJ Celebrates 10 Years
The 2026 Jamaica Day NJ celebration marks the event’s 10th anniversary under the theme:
“One Love. One Culture. One Legacy.”
The free community celebration will feature music, entertainment, food, family activities and cultural programming at Eastside Park in Paterson.
The addition of The Reggae Museum NYC exhibition strengthens the anniversary program by creating a dedicated space for reflection, discovery and recognition of the women whose contributions remain essential to Jamaican music history.
