Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Beneath a New Moon

Several hours after the eclipse, attention shifted from the Sun to the nighttime sky. The annual Perseid meteor shower peaked during the night of August 12 and continued into the early morning of August 13.

The timing could hardly have been better. Because a total solar eclipse can occur only around a new moon, the same lunar phase that produced the eclipse also left the nighttime sky free from bright moonlight. That darkness created excellent conditions for seeing the Perseids, especially from rural locations away from city lights.

What Causes the Perseid Meteor Shower?

The Perseids appear every year when Earth travels through a trail of dust and debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.

When these tiny pieces of comet material enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speed, they heat up and produce the bright streaks commonly called shooting stars. Perseid meteors travel at approximately 37 miles—or 59 kilometers—per second and are known for producing colorful trails that can remain visible briefly after the meteor disappears. The shower gets its name from the constellation Perseus, the area of the sky from which the meteors appear to originate. However, meteors can flash across any part of the sky, so observers did not need to stare directly at the constellation to enjoy the display.

A Rare Day-to-Night Celestial Experience

What made August 12, 2026, so memorable was the transition from one major astronomical event to another. During the day, the Moon concealed the Sun along the path of totality. Later that night, the same new moon created the darkness needed for an outstanding view of the Perseid meteor shower.

The events had different viewing areas. Only observers situated within the eclipse’s narrow path experienced totality, while the Perseids were visible much more widely across the Northern Hemisphere wherever skies remained dark and clear.
